It's lots of fun and a great vacation for the kids. If you can afford it, it's a good family vacation too.

But it's not about baseball.

The coaches are generally very good HS coaches who are doing this over the summer. People to People either gives them a free summer vacation to an exotic locale or pays them a nominal amount. Your coach may be from a HS in Oklahoma or Texas. Obviously, his contacts aren't going to help "Junior" get any attention way over here in NC. You can get credit for classes under certain situations.

The competition in most venues is limited. The foreign teams aren't nearly as talented as US teams of the same age group. If there are any scouts there at all, it will be for foreign club teams ... nothing that would interest anyone.

It's not too long though (between 1-2 weeks). It probably won't interfere with your real baseball. I wouldn't do it if you were between your Junior & Senior years of HS. Other than that, it won't hurt. Some venues are better than others as far as baseball, but not as attractive for site-seeing. The European teams are much weaker than the teams in the Carribean. I imagine, the Asian-Austrailian teams would be decent.

The concept on this one for me is simply the experience and opportunity. My player is a sophmore so we haven't really started the showcase circuit locally yet.

How do players initially get invited to this program?

People to People has an affiliation with AAU. I believe that they get a copy of the mailing list. If your son has/was affiliated with AAU, you may get an invite that way. Other than that, they have their own web site that you can visit.

It is a reputable outfit and it's interesting.
