Opening game a classic at ECU

In the 16u bracket two Charlotte rivals the Panthers and the O's Black gave the crowd an intense contest. Each team scored a run in the first on rbi singles by Ty Buttery for the Cats and Garrett Ray for On Deck. An rbi single by Jacob Midkiff in the 3rd put the O's up 2-1 and it would stay that way as it became a pitchers duel. The Panthers threatened in both the 5th and 6th putting multiple runners on base with one out but Lefty Brad Stone picked off 2 runners in the 5th and induced a key ground ball double play in the 6th to end the innings. Panther Jackson Campana came up HUGE for the cats leading off the 7th with a solo blast to tie the game at 2-2 which ended up being the final score. A super exciting game for the opener. We shall see what the tie does for each team in the final pool standings!!

Diamond Bits from game two

High in the sky in the pressbox at ECU we just witnessed a two run big fly by Matt Pearson of Charlotte Christian that put CBC Navy up 2-1 over the Upstate Mavericks in the 2nd inning. Doubles by Ethan Garrett-Ardrey Kell and Brandon Wilkerson-Mallard Creek in the 3rd pushes the CBC lead to 5-1. Mavericks get a run on an rbi single by Trevor Bradley. Two runs driven in by a bases loaded single from JC Howze-Marvin Ridge makes the score 7-2 at the end of 5 innings of play. The Mavericks have loaded the bases with no out in the top of the 6th. Ben Morris comes thru with a two run single as does Colby Painter but the Mavs come up short as Coach Hennessey summons Ethan Garrett to get the last out of the game. Final Score: CBC 7 Upstate 6

Points of interest: There are teams from 9 states playing in the tournament this weekend. There are 9 fields being used. There are 24 umpires working the event.

Game 1 Guy Smith Stadium
On Deck 2011 Black vs Wilson Bulldogs
Projected 6 PM Start

After a late afternoon thunderstorm tore through Pitt County, Coach Ronald Vincent and his crew has gotten the field at GS playable. Some water standing in foul territory, but lots of turfus put out and the infield looks good.

Should be a slow track for base stealers.

Overcast. Wind is light and variable towards right Center.

Pitchers duel into the 3rd. On Deck erupts for 4 runs off 2 bunts for hits by Burris and Elwood and 2 errors by the dogs.

Houchins answers with double to lead off top 4. Boyd scores Houchins with a ground out 4-3

Jimmy Boyd relieves Comer in bottom of 4th
Comer gives up 4 runs on 4 hits with 3 team errors
James Pierce in RF with an outstanding layout catch in the 4th to end the inning. A WebGem!

Lamm leadoff single in top 5. Pearce into 6-4-3 DP. Alex Jensen makes a great back handed layout and throw to get Mitchell out at 1st to end inning.

Hovis has a nice quick pick off move for righty. Looks really good through 6 innings. Scouts gunning him early on. Good spread of scouts here… maybe 10 total.

Lead off single by DH Tyler Powell in bot 6. Advances to second on passed ball. Moved to third on 4-3 by Conner Patteron, scored on 4-3 by Brantley Smith

Tyler Powell on Mound for O’s top 7…. Zach Houchins leadoff double off fence in right. UA3 by Jeremy Lucas advances Houchins to third. Passed ball during Jimmy Boyd at bat scores Houchins. Jimmy Boyd walks. Austin Lee 6-3-5 double play to end the game.

Bulldogs 0001001 243
O’s 004001X 561

WP Reilly Hovis
LP Matt Comer

Hovis pitched sharply. Guns had him at 83-86
Boyd comes in and gives up 2 hits and a run

Hitters Warehouse 2011 vs SCP 2011

Sunny, gorgeous afternoon for baseball very light wind blwoing in variably. Good crowd for two good teams.

Starting Pitchers

SCP Max Pouse

HW Chase LeMaster

Hitters Warehouse took early advantage of defensive miscues picking up 2 runs in the first. After a 1 RBI double by Hitter Warehouse Left Fielder Brian Beard in the third, Pouse was lifted with 1 out and relieved by Nick Silva.

HW’s pitcher of choice, Lemaster, kept a steady pace, inducing ground balls and fly balls to limit the SCP run production. While SCP’s offense sputtered, the bright spots were Elliot Fowler going big fly solo in the fourth and catcher Brett Lang going monster in the bottom of the 7th with a 2 run HR to bring the Panthers back to within striking distance…but no cigars.

Hitter’s Warehouse offense and defense was solid, with notable effort by SS Michael Rienerth who made several nice plays up the middle robbing SCP of potential base hits.

Overhead “It’s so hot out here, my mother in law is sweating. And I didn’t think witches sweat.”

HW 2 0 2 0 0 2 0 6 8 1

SCP 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 4 4 1

Nova Patriots 17u vs 17u Canes

Game time temp 88 degrees Partly cloudy. Winds Light drifting to right field, swirling to left

Field conditions Perfect

Historic Guy Smith Stadium seeing some great teams this weekend. Canes 17u no exception.

Starting Pitchers:

Nova: Taylor Habick

Canes: Evan Beal

This 5 inning mercy rule game was all Canes. Canes pounced early scoring one in the first and taking advantage of walks and hits to score 4 in the 2nd. Canes basepath aggression was in full gear and applying pressure to the defense. Canes first baseman Luke Bondurant had a 2 rbi double immediately followed in the lineup by DH Taylor West with a 1 rbi double in the bottom of the 2nd to lead the scoring.

2 key errors in the third allowed the Canes to extend the inning and plate 5 runs.

Good showing on the mound by reliever Bennet Hixson on the Canes.

Play of the Game:

Matt Kianka takes left field in the 5th and immediately finds action. No outs and bases loaded, Fly ball to right caught by Kianka and lasers a throw home to Catcher Josh Clark to put out the tagging runner from third. Nice hose, Kianka!

Nova 0 1 0 0 1 2 4 2

Canes17u 1 4 5 2 X 12 8 0

WP Evan Beal

LP Taylor Habick

GBC vs Canes 17u

Guy Smith Stadium

Game Time Temp 83 degrees

Under the lights

Wind: Light and Variable drifting out towards left, quartering

Starting Pitchers

GBC Zac Joyce

Canes Brandon Delk

A great game to finish off Day 2 at Guy Smith. Canes playing game 2 of a double header, answer GBC’s run in the top of the first with 2 of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Delk held his own against a feisty GBC squad, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. Nick Thompson relieved Delk for the Canes and was stellar, going 3 innings of no run no hit baseball.

Zac Joyce of GBC showed a nice breaking ball and really battled on the mound. Pitched a good solid six innings.

The Canes offense came alive in the bottom of the 4th scoring 4 runs, led by Brandon Delk’s 3 rbi HR blast, pushing the Canes ahead for a 6-3 lead.

GBC would not go quietly scoring 1 in the top of the 6th and then a top of the 7th rally to tie the game at 6. Canes would not be denied, however. Luke Bonderant walk off single scored Matt Kianka from second to seal the win for Coach Petty and the Canes.

Of Note:

Dakari Cooke of the Canes 2 rbi triple bottom of the first… this kid can FLY around the bases!

Brandon Delk with nice 3 rbi Big Fly

GBC’s Robert Deluca can swing the stick… going 3 for 3 with a double and a scud hit to first late in the game that scored a run and another off errant throw.

Notes:

Fun baseball on a Friday night. Michael Gill came in on relief for the Canes late and his unique pitching style kept GBC at bay momentarily. Showed good pop on his fast ball while hiding the ball a VERY long time.

Great crowd and good sportsmanship has been exhibited so far and is very refreshing. Teams should be complimented on this!

Special guests at the game tonight was the 10/11 Year Old Little League Team from Chantilly, Virginia… The Virginia State Champions for that age group who are in town for The Tournament of Champions held each year for the Southeast Region here in Greenville at Elm Street Park. They picked a fun one to come and watch!

Press Box Friend Award: Awarded to Coach Jeff Petty for supplying the press box with a VERY legible roster and lineup card… completely filled out. You have no idea what that means to a Press Box staff!

GBC 1 0 2 0 0 1 2 6 7 2

Canes 17u 2 0 0 4 0 0 1 7 8 2

Not responsible for errors or omissions… its late and I cant see the computer screen through my dirty contacts.

Canes South 16u vs South Charlotte Panthers 16u

Went to watch this much billed matchup as did about 10 college coaches at Guy Smith Prep Field at 6:30 this evening. Two great teams.

The game ended in a 9-9 tie but what was interesting was the Panthers reached base 12 times by either a walk or a hit batter and 6 of them ended up scoring. The Cats had 7 singles in the game. The Canes had 6 batters reach base by walk or hit batter but only 2 of them scored. They used 3 home runs and 2 doubles to score 7 of the runs.

Your Prayers are needed tonight

Unfortunately one of the boys on the South Charlotte Panthers 16u team was hit in the face by a ball while making a play in the field. Please keep this young man in your thoughts and prayers for him to make a full recovery soon. Thank you.

The Canes had 6 batters reach base by walk or hit batter but only 2 of them scored. They used 3 home runs and 2 doubles to score 7 of the runs.

This game will be continued at Woodstock
